Religion and World Views and Collective Worship
As a Church of England School our Christian ethos promotes inclusion and values diversity. Our shared values, Nurture, Serve and Grow, are part of the everyday life of our school and of our curriculum. Our vision is built around Creating a Chance to Shine every day.
We learn about the Christian values of community, compassion, courage, dignity, forgiveness, friendship, generosity, hope, joy, justice, love, peace, perseverance, respect, service, thankfulness, trust, truthfulness, wisdom.
Collective Worship is invitational and takes place daily to provide children with time to reflect and question current topics and events as well as encouraging thinking skills and a growing knowledge of the part religion and ethics play in modern life. The children are encouraged to develop a deeper understanding of their own worldviews and the worldviews of others; how these are shaped and develop over time. Our children attend worship alongside a ‘buddy’ from another year group to encourage discussion and strong relationships across the whole school.
Our Collective Worship Group is made up of children from Year 1 to Year 6, who plan and lead services and worship. They regularly review the Collective Worship in school and have previously attended pupil training with Coventry DBE and Primary Picture News supporting children leading worship in school. As courageous advocates, they support a chosen charity each year not just in raising funds but also raising awareness and sharing information. This year the Collective Worship Group are supporting Cancer Research.
Religious and Worldviews Education meets the Church of England Statement of Entitlement and follows the Coventry and Warwickshire Religion and World Views Agreed Syllabus produced by Coventry and Warwickshire SACRE (Standing Advisory Council for Religious Education) alongside resources from Understanding Christianity as well as Christian World Views and Advocacy Project resources from Coventry DBE.
To help children learning about Religions and World Views, we use four different disciplines; theology, philosophy, human and social sciences, and history.
Theology is learning from ancient and sacred stories, considering the way these contribute to shaping Worldviews.
Philosophy is all about ideas and thinking; helping us to understand why the world might be the way it is and why we might be here, as well as ideas about God or something beyond ourselves.
Human and social science is all about understanding how society works, how faith communities live, belong and express world views together and how people embody their world view.
History is connected to RE and World Views because we can ask questions about religion and world Views in the past and how people lived out their beliefs and ideas.
Parents can withdraw their child from Religious Education (RE) at any time, with or without giving a reason. To do so, you must formally request this from the school. The school is then required to supervise the child, but is not obligated to provide additional teaching
